Suyo, Ilocos Sur — The Watwat Festival, a vibrant celebration of shared food, blessings, and thanksgiving, brought together Indigenous cultural communities, government officials, teachers, and learners on May 12, 2026, at Urzadan Elementary School.
The event highlighted the rich cultural heritage of the Indigenous Peoples of Suyo while fostering unity and pride in local identity.
Indigenous leaders and elders, local government officials, Department of Education (DepEd) officials in the region and division, school heads, teachers, and students participated in a day of solidarity and cultural appreciation.
Suyo Mayor Mario B. Subagan, Vice Mayor Renato B. Ngangac, and the entire Sangguniang Bayan joined the celebration.
Also present were several Schools Division Superintendents: Joel B. Lopez (Ilocos Sur), Vilma D. Eda (Vigan City), Anselmo R. Aludino (Batac City), Jorge M. Reinante (La Union), Sheila Marie A. Primicias (San Fernando City), Fatima R. Boado (Pangasinan I), Vivian Luz S. Pagatpatan (Pangasinan II), and Marciano C. Soriano (Dagupan City).
A highlight of the program was the presentation of a Certificate of Recognition to SDS Lopez by the Suyo Municipal Council. The award recognized his significant efforts and initiatives in advancing quality education in the province.
In her message, DepEd Regional Director Estela P. Leon-Carino, proudly an Ibaloi, encouraged everyone to take pride in their identity and culture. “We must always be proud of one’s identity and culture,” she said.
The Watwat Festival continues to serve as a meaningful platform for preserving Indigenous traditions while strengthening partnerships between communities, local government, and the education sector.
