The power of social media cannot be underestimated. As such, Ilocos Sur National High School (ISNHS) Junior High School teacher Raymund Florendo used Messenger in sourcing out funds to support the frontliners of the pandemic COVID-19 in the Heritage City of Vigan.

“Helping our brethren is a responsibility. As a public servant and as Christian, it is my duty to extend a hand to those in need. Hence, this prompted me to create a Chat Group inviting my friends, colleagues, and civic-spirited citizens for donations for our frontliners.

“I am very happy many responded,” he said.

As of April 3, 2020, the group of Florendo has already distributed 1,846 face shields.

Said protective devices are made at home with the help of regular volunteers that include his fellow teachers Jefferson Ganaban of ISNHS and Marianne Arce of Vigan National High School East.

“Those who were unable to give financial support on the other hand rendered their services in making face shields,” Florendo said.

As for his message in today’s crisis, “This is the best time to show our love, care and support. There is no big or small amount. What matters is that helping others should come from the heart.”

“Had we raised more than enough funds, we wish to give incentives to our frontliners,” he added.

Face shields are being distributed to the health workers of Gabriela Silang Hospital, barangay tanods, security guards, and members of the community.
